What is the proper etiquette when losing a fat stack of Christmas and Birthday checks? In the interest of balanced bank accounts, I would like to inform the senders without receiving any replacement checks, but that strategy may prove difficult. Even worse, what if I tell nobody, discover the checks six months from now, and cash them? We’ve all seen that episode of Seinfeld. What to do?

    Well, don’t you kind of need to tell them why the checks aren’t cashed? Maybe you could send them thank you notes with a great big apologies and make it clear that they don’t need to send you another.

    You definitely need to tell the check writers to call their banks and have those checks cancelled unless you are absolutely sure that no one else has his grubby hands on your checks. I don#t think it is a big deal to tell them that the checks are gone, mistakes happen, but the fees that may incur from having banks cancel checks might be a bit of an issue.
