Grass? I’ll pass.

Maybe we should have called him Quirky, instead of Indiana Jones. He has a few odd quirks, which I’ve never seen in another dog. The most noticeable is that he doesn’t really seem to care for walking on the grass. He walks on solid surfaces whenever possible. Tonight we noticed that he walked on the bricks lining our garden instead of the grass to get out to the concrete walking path. Also tonight was the first time he’s ever done his business on the grass - and only then because Glen pulled him out of somebody’s nicely manicured shrub garden. At this point you’re thinking, the dog probably just doesn’t like grass. Not so, as whenever he flops himself down in the shade, he finds himself a nice grassy spot to do it.

More strange behavior - he’s finicky about his treats. If it isn’t liver flavored, he won’t eat it. I’ve never met a dog who would ever turn down food, especially treats. He’ll lick the heck out of them, get very excited, and then just leave them alone.

Meanwhile, we just love having him around. He’s very sweet and loveable (not odd at all), hasn’t done his business in the house (except the first night), and hasn’t barked at all (again, since the first night). We’re very happy to have adopted Dr. Jones. (Oh, and he has already demonstrated a superior intellect to the cats - he knows his name. He will respond to “Indiana”, but not to “Otto” said in the same tone of voice).

OK, he doesn’t like grass, but the real question is, how does he feel about snakes? Also, is his dad Sean Connery? :)

I’m really jealous of your menagerie. I need to come visit soon!

I hereby present: Indiana Jones, the newest resident of 2317 Rebecca Drive. Feline residents are skeptical but tolerant.

    I LOVE HIM!!!

  2. Comment from DAD on 28 Jul. 2005, 4:43 am :

He’s cute! Has Indy found anything to chew yet?
We love the name. He looks a little like Katie(our dog for 17 years).

  3. Comment from Glen on 28 Jul. 2005, 5:19 am :

I should probably mention that we got this dog at a shelter in Indiana. Illinois was fresh out of small dogs.

He hasn’t found anything to chew destructively, but he enjoys lifting his leg around the house. Hopefully that will change after he’s fixed. I greatly prefer the way cats apply their scent to the house.

oh, man. he’s adorable! how old is he?

  5. Comment from Tammy on 28 Jul. 2005, 2:41 pm :

I am going to kidnap him from your house, you realize that, don’t you?
How was his first night? Did he sleep? How are the cats?

    i want a little dog. :( lucky!

  7. Comment from Glen on 28 Jul. 2005, 4:45 pm :

He is about 1, according to the shelter. His first night was mostly fine, except for some 3 a.m. beagle-like howling (he wanted out of his crate). The cats have been wary but more and more relaxed. Mostly they sit upon high and peer at the dog as he runs around.

Hah, Indiana is the dog’s name. I applaud your choice in moniker.

What a darling face! Now I have to visit soon!

  10. Comment from Glen on 29 Jul. 2005, 6:35 pm :

Indiana lost his manhood today. Speaking of which, Rachel reported that he was chased by the cat this morning. The cats are taking this much better than I expected.

Indy. Priceless. Cute dog. Congrats, especially to otto and lilly for taking it in stride.

  12. Comment from Maggie on 15 Aug. 2005, 4:24 pm :

I am in love. And coming to visit. But probably after I apply to adopt Merlin or Reilly (see link).

  13. Comment from Glen on 16 Aug. 2005, 7:48 am :

I approve! Why a Wheaten Terrier?

  14. Comment from Maggie on 16 Aug. 2005, 6:45 pm :

Well, maybe at some point there’ll be a car trip and Indy and the dog-to-be will get acquainted!

They’re great dogs. I grew up with them - and since there’s a rescue site for them, I figure why not adopt somebody who needs a home. :)

Unblogged happenings

Posted by Glen in on 22 Jul. 2005, 2:10 pm

Went to Phoenix (hot and crappy). Went to wedding (Congratulations Emily and Pete!). Went to the lake, was joined by Mark (see new photos of lake). Went canoeing and camping in Indiana (surprising amount of topography, saw bald eagle). Blogged about none of it. Had good time nevertheless.

Going golfing tomorrow (still really terrible at golf). Going to see Arcade Fire and Killers in Chicago on Sunday (very excited). Also have tickets for upcoming Decemberists and Sufjan Stevens shows in Madison and Urbana, respectively (again, excited). Going to mow lawn now on day off. May go to look at dogs later on.

Also, Congratulations to Jenni and Bill!

  1. Comment from Katie on 22 Jul. 2005, 4:09 pm :

The end of that post was not specific enough. Congratulations to Jenni and Bill, who are expecting a little one! Baby, baby, baby!

  2. Comment from Angela on 24 Jul. 2005, 11:20 pm :

    1. YAY! for Jenni and Bill! When can we expect this new little person?

    2. When will Cletus join the Dimock clan?

  3. Comment from Em (Owen!) on 25 Jul. 2005, 10:44 am :

Congrats to Jenni and Bill! The more important question, however, is when will my wedding pictures be posted? ;)

  4. Comment from Glen on 27 Jul. 2005, 7:41 pm :

Good question! I wasn’t sure if you wanted me to post them. As soon as the dog calms down (see new post), I will get to it.

  5. Comment from M. on 28 Jul. 2005, 5:45 am :

The Decembrists are so good! I had only heard their name until the Beck concert last weekend when they opened. Kind of like Placebo but less miserable lyrics.
