We now have a house. I will post more after my signature hand recovers and we are finished ripping out some errant home-improvement projects, spackling, painting, and shampooing away the scents of former cats (detectable by current cats and thus a cause for alarm).
Space-age wisdom

The time has come to retire “space-age” as an adjective for marketing consumer products. The space age began in 1957 and peaked, I would argue, in 1969. For the record, I prefer my modern consumer products to be constructed of durable information-age materials.

Good thought! The information age is likely to be more durable than the space age, since it is not as dependent on limited energy sources, nor as physically dangerous.
Two things

1) Belated Congratulations to Jane and Chris! (Their wedding gave us an excuse to make a Maryland trip the weekend before last).
2) Just two days remain until we close on the house, and Rachel has been unable to sleep due to her excitement. Personally, I’ve mostly just managed to wind myself up into a wad of walking stress. Nevertheless, I’m all geared up for some drywall repair, followed by furious painting, followed by landscaping, followed by a possible deck installation and/or replacement of ugly chain-link fence.
Here are some soybeans or corn, as seen from our soon-to-be-former apartment in Savoy. They were corn two years ago, soybeans last year, and they look like soybeans again this year. Something about denitrification, says Rachel.

-
It’s not denitrification, it’s nitrogen-fixing, for the record. And I’m not sure if that’s the reason that the farmer is still growing soybeans, but it could be
.
-
Also, I found out that it’s corn, not soybeans.

Brilliant. Now if I could just tweak the code to auto-generate my thesis…

Wow. I should turn one of those in for my Gerontology term paper.

Now that we have your house number, how about a street address so your loyal readers can shower you with housewarming gifts!

Add another to the call for street addresses.
Comment from Glen on 2 May. 2005, 4:44 pm :
Really, we received plenty of gifts for our wedding, but I will send out an email with our new address nevertheless — just as soon as I hook up the desktop computer with my address book.

Did you know that Roy is an example of a ‘Bagle’? That’s a mixture of Basset and Beagle.

Your loyal readers anxiously await an update on your subsequent casualties….
Comment from Glen on 18 May. 2005, 5:45 am :
I know, I know. I have in front of me a long list of completed projects and an equally long list of incomplete projects, but there have been no major disasters (yet). Just wait until I get to the built-in bookshelves.
Comment from Maggie on 18 May. 2005, 7:05 pm :
PLEASE tell me you are not tearing out the built-in bookshelves….
Comment from Glen on 19 May. 2005, 5:28 am :
No no, I am installing built-in bookshelves. Although I suspect the installation process may involve cursing at them and ripping them out at some point.
