Atlantic Coast Loyalty

Careful Testudo, you’re in Big Ten country. Me, I’ll be publicly rooting for the Illini and projecting my secret ACC loyalties onto this Testudo atop my monitor.

  1. Comment from Glen on 3 Apr. 2005, 3:34 pm :

I’m honestly not sure where my loyalties will lie tomorrow night, but I am just happy to see a Big Ten-ACC matchup. Everybody around here believes the ACC is overrated, and tomorrow they will have a chance to prove it.

  2. Comment from Glen on 4 Apr. 2005, 9:44 pm :

Well, I have to admit, that was a little disappointing. (The outcome, not the game).

Photoshopped House

Comments?

Original exterior:

Possible alternatives:

We like blue, but it might be too dark.

Green harkens back to my childhood favorite.

Gray. Eh.

A little bland, but unoffensive.

This yellow induces vomiting, but we would pick a better shade. Yellow is tough to pull off in Photoshop.

  1. Comment from Katie on 27 Mar. 2005, 7:12 pm :

I’m all for the lighter blue or the green. You should put in some fake shrubberies while you’re at it so we can really get an idea. :)

  2. Comment from Glen on 27 Mar. 2005, 8:09 pm :

    Like this?
    House with bushes

  3. Comment from MIL on 27 Mar. 2005, 9:00 pm :

What’s wrong with the original color? Do you just need something to play with? House painting ain’t all that fun!

  4. Comment from Glen on 27 Mar. 2005, 9:12 pm :

The original color is fine, I suppose. We’re just trying to prioritize our initial projects.

  5. Comment from Katie on 27 Mar. 2005, 9:34 pm :

I suggest Rachel build the house in Sims and add all the shrubberies and make it the color you want, create Glen and Rachel characters, get a couple sim kitties and a sim doggy, stand them all outside the house, and then take a screen shot. (I’d be surprised if she hasn’t begun this already)

  6. Comment from Glen on 27 Mar. 2005, 9:54 pm :

Yes, she has already done most of that. The Sims 2 does not have pets, though.

  7. Comment from Em on 28 Mar. 2005, 9:11 am :

I like blue or yellow for houses. You’d need a lighter blue, or one with gray undertones. Definitely not Photoshop Yellow.

  8. Comment from Tammy on 28 Mar. 2005, 9:41 am :

I like the blue! It looks really good with bushes in front, too.

Real music

Yet another reminder that there is more to music than FM: The Decemberists‘ Picaresque.

  1. Comment from Tammy on 23 Mar. 2005, 8:22 am :

You should get XM. Best stations: Unsigned (playing unsigned or independent label music), XMU (playing alternative stuff that doesn’t make it onto FM) and Fred and Ethel (ditto for the most part).

  2. Comment from Glen on 23 Mar. 2005, 8:50 am :

Would it be cheaper than my $15/week iTunes habit?

  3. Comment from Tammy on 25 Mar. 2005, 10:40 am :

I’d say it could supplement your habit by perhaps introducing you to new music that you could then purchase on iTunes. The XM receiver costs about $100 (depending on the model you purchase) and about $75 for the installation. But once you have that finished, they bill you $26 every 4 months, which isn’t bad.

Et voila. The best features are the neighborhood and the interior, not the exterior appearance. I would include some interior photos, but people are still living in the house (they probably don’t want their bed displayed on my website). More details to follow, I’m sure. Rachel has been unable to sleep for two nights straight, but I’m still unsure whether to succomb to fear or excitement. At the moment, I am calm.
New house

Back to Thesis Week II.

  1. Comment from Glen on 22 Mar. 2005, 6:45 pm :

I will interpret the general lack of comments as skepticism for this house being located in Champaign, not Maryland.

  2. Comment from DAD on 22 Mar. 2005, 7:58 pm :

It takes a while to consider the implications. Step 1 is pending.

  3. Comment from Katie on 22 Mar. 2005, 8:49 pm :

My lack of response is general jealousy of the fact that three of my family members bought/moved into new houses in the last month. Mom gave me permission to redecorate my room, though, yipee!

  4. Comment from Tammy on 23 Mar. 2005, 8:21 am :

I am very excited for you guys! I can’t wait to see the inside! The exterior could look a lot better without a whole lot of work– just plant some tallish ornamental shrubbery things and it will look great.

  5. Comment from Glen on 23 Mar. 2005, 8:53 am :

Yes, the front yard plans include ripping out the basetball pole, putting in a new lamp, planting another tree, installing some larger “shrubbery things” (there are actually bushes there now, but they’re tiny), and replacing the white rocks with mulch. Rachel thinks the house should be painted a different color, but I don’t mind the red. Maybe I’ll paint it lime green like my favorite house from childhood.

  6. Comment from Em on 23 Mar. 2005, 9:26 am :

Congratulations! Homeownership rocks. :) A brighter exterior color would look good, and make it look more open.

  7. Comment from DAD on 23 Mar. 2005, 1:00 pm :

Any shrubbery should be fast-growing or large when purchased. When’s closing?

  8. Comment from Glen on 23 Mar. 2005, 2:05 pm :

    Closing April 29.

Exhibit D regarding high housing prices in the Washington area (see link). From the article on median prices in Frederick County:
“In Mount Airy, Zip code 21771, prices rose 20 percent to $324,000; in Monrovia, Zip code 21770, prices rose 17 percent to $366,250.”

  9. Comment from Mom on 23 Mar. 2005, 2:38 pm :

I am so happy for you and Rachel. I really like the inside of the house. Some trees and shrubs will do wonders for the outside. Wish I lived close by. Would love to help with any gardening you might be doing. Glen, the house you loved as a kid was a bright turquoise! Did not especially enjoy writing this. Would much rather the phone!

  10. Comment from Freda Williams on 24 Mar. 2005, 8:59 am :

Congrats you two! How exciting! ;( We miss you though

For Emily

On July 2, 2005, I will be strutting my stuff down Em’s aisle, as I get to be one of her bridesmaids. Note how short I am - the dress is supposed to be midcalf.

  1. Comment from Maggie on 15 Mar. 2005, 2:39 pm :

I love that dress. And a great color. And wahoo, Em!

  2. Comment from Mom on 15 Mar. 2005, 9:39 pm :

Have you lost weight? You look Mahvelous, dahlin! Love the do!

  3. Comment from Rachel on 16 Mar. 2005, 9:10 am :

A tiny bit… I think it’s cause I asked Glen to take the picture from a flattering angle, but thank you!

The ‘do she cries, “Zee hair, she is too long! Must be put back! But not all of zem are long enough! And zee bangs, zey are out of control!” :-)

  4. Comment from Angela on 16 Mar. 2005, 9:57 am :

oh, yeah, is your hair darker or is it just the lighting in the photograph? The dress is quite lovely!

  5. Comment from Rachel on 16 Mar. 2005, 10:51 am :

It is indeed darker. The part you can see is my natural color - it’s been a while since it’s been highlighted. The highlights are all put up in the back.

  6. Comment from Freda Williams on 24 Mar. 2005, 8:55 am :

Don’t worry Rach! It’s about ankle length on me too!
