30% More Cowbell

I think this look is somewhat less ugly than the orange. Obviously, there is still work to be done.

    Okay–I admit that I don’t know what “30% more cowbell” means. ?

It’s a tired reference to a Saturday Night Live skit.

May I say that I am not incredibly pleased with the appearance of the blog? If I were to make suggestions, I’d say that the date needs to be smaller and flush right, or if you keep it on the left, it needs to be in a smaller, sans serif font matching your body text. Same for the ‘comments’ title. The fancy font at that size competes and it makes it seem like a lot is going on per post. I’d also like to see a separater between post and comments, perhaps a rule that is three quarters the length of the top rule.

Then again, I’ve only studied print design and don’t know much about web. I just like to give my two cents.

I know the fonts are ugly, but that’s because I haven’t worked on them yet. Save yourself the pain, and use an RSS reader :)

hmm…I just noticed the missing tag board. Such are my powers of observation.

I want to alert you to what should become your favorite website: http://www.engrish.com/

The Japanese! Their English! Hours of Enjoyment.

Ahh yes, engrish.com. That already was my favorite website.

Is a tagboard really necessary here? The old one was always stagnant.

My blog is going to look like a big, hairy mess for the next week or so. I need to learn CSS better.

New Lameness

Consider the following:

  • Several weeks ago, I promised a new blog with RSS support
  • Since then, I have posted nothing substantial
  • b2, my “old” blog software, has morphed into a snazzy new package called Wordpress.

Any reasonable person might conclude that I cooked up an awesome new blog in this time, but alas, I did not. The good news is that I did upgrade to Wordpress, and aerogeek.org finally supports RSS. The bad news is that the new blog looks pretty crappy and still lacks important features such as Rachel’s Blog and a new photo album. As you might expect, I am working on the look and will get those important features going shortly. The old blog was so 2001, what with the wedding page and the research page and the antiquated html and the real name plastered all over the place and the things of this nature, that I simply had to put it out of its misery. It may not look it yet, but the new blog will soon reign supreme.

New blog TODO #216: Inline comments, just like the old blog.

You’re getting a lot further than I am on the blog redesign at least. You started!!!

Fiction

If you haven’t already–and you probably have, because I’m chronically behind the curve–you should read the excellent The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. And I should resolve to read more fiction.

  1. Comment from Angela on 7 Jan. 2005, 12:41 pm :

ooh, I liked that book too. A co-worker read the Reader’s Digest version a few months ago. Now why they have an RD version of this short short book, I will never know.

  2. Comment from Glen on 8 Jan. 2005, 11:10 am :

Were I an author, I would forbid Reader’s Digest from ever publishing one of my novels. Similarly to how, if I were a movie director, I would forbid movie theatres from showing my movie trailers using one of those LCD projectors that they use to show commercials, slides and trailers before the real trailers begin. The resolution and sound quality are just inadequate.
