Feline Thanksgiving

Otto is thankful for the sun.

Congratulations to Jenni and Bill, who were married this week in Jamaica. Rachel and I managed to attend the wedding, toughing it out at a Jamaican resort with six other hardy family members. The Hobie Cat sailing and free drinks were especially taxing, as was last night’s layover in NYC, featuring a cameo by Tosso. Random but interesting resort feature: Locals were not allowed on the property, but a few clever individuals drifted in from the ocean and set up shop in the waves directly in front of the resort beach. They brought with them small rafts full of wooden trinkets and sea shells, though I’m told they had additional Jamaican merchandise for sale…
Much to the chagrin of the official cruise ship photographer, I took some wedding photos with my antique “35mm” camera, but they are still trapped on “film”, waiting to be revealed through some obscure chemical process. My digital point-and-shoot has made me lazy and impatient, but it sadly will not accept my SLR lenses. I wonder if Ginza has good prices on digital SLRs…
Speaking of which, I am being shipped off to Tokyo for three weeks, following Thanksgiving in Savoy with the other Dimocks. To date, my Japanese cultural training has consisted of re-reading the first half of Dave Barry Does Japan and cowering in fear at the incomprehensible Tokyo Subway map printed in my guide book. Rachel and I are skeptical of the length of this trip, but my airline miles will soon add up to a trip for two to Hawaii (or Alaska).
You need to watch Big Bird in Japan. After thinking everyone on a Tokyo street was from Ohio, Big Bird learns that “ohio” actually means hello in Japanese. Big Bird also learns a song to count in Japanese. One two three is ichi ni san.
Also, I’d like to say officially to you and everyone that your e-mail management is ABOMINABLE. I mean, a response today for an e-mail sent in Sept.??? OY.
Big Bird went to Japan? Was this before or after Follow That Bird?
Big Bird in Japan (1991) was after Follow That Bird (1985), which was after Big Bird in China (1983).
Four is shi, five is go.
Just got back from London, where:
a) A highly obscure document standard was hammered out
b) People are still in denial about the U.S. election
c) As first reported on Mike’s blog, my attempt to view some alleged Northern Lights was thwarted by the ubiquitous English clouds. I Photoshopped the crap out of this shot but still failed to reveal the Aurora Borealis hidden within:

For reasons unknown, Rachel still refuses to go winter-camping in Alaska to satisfy my curiousity about the behavior of these lights.
Get Halo 2.
Will do, as soon as I’m home for more than a three-day stretch. Item d) above should have read: “There was a massive Halo 2 ad campaign.”
Oh, so what exactly is the travel schedule for the next month? Please provide details on Jamaica/New York/Thanksgiving/Japan/Christmas. Are you in Jamaica now?
I was in Germany and Norway for work, having a grand ol’ time and speeding up a storm. I drove a snazzy VW, and now that I’m back in my American car, am having difficulty remembering where reverse is. I’ve driven over two curbs so far, and almost drove over one of our dirtbikes in the garage, thinking I was backing out. Oops!
I saw the Northern Lights in Norway. They were fabulous. I’ll go to Alaska with you!
Angela: Back from Jamaica, going to Japan next week. More on this later…
Em: Makes you want a VW, doesn’t it. Renting one for two weeks is exactly what persuaded me to buy one.
leave ‘em. burn everything! let’s go.
Barack Obama was the only eensy ray of light the whole night though. When he appeared, life was less bleak.
‘Cuse me? I thought that Maryland went to Kerry. What’z the prob?
It did, and so did Illinois. Solidly. I meant that our votes would have been more effective in Ohio.
We should all chip in to buy a small condo in Ohio…that’s not voter fraud…is it?
Speaking of voter fraud, Rachel and I have learned (accidentally) that it is possible to be registered in two places at once. We only voted once, but I always assumed there was some sort of national control.
Angela, there was one other ray of light for me out of this whole thing…. Being as I have been in Europe since before the election, and the entire continent is appalled at the outcome, I have been offered no fewer than three consolation hugs from hottie Europeans reading CNN.com in netcafes. Whoohoo!
P.S. Angela, did you get your cats yet?! I miss mine terribly.
I was at the Ben & Jerry’s today (almost, almost over the bitter outcome) when I saw a huge poster for an Election Day sundae. It was this insane concoction of cheesecake-flavored ice cream with bizarre fruit filling. The kind of partisan frozen dessert that Dubya would eat…I yelped, people stared, and then I had to leave. Eating ice cream has been ruined!!!! There is no solace. Not even hugs from European hotties in netcafes.
Also, no cats have been acquired. Perhaps I’d be more calm in ice cream shops if I had a visit from one of those Pets on Wheels teams. I always “want” pets but then never follow through. Sorry to get everyone excited.
Hmm…I seem to be only full of good news today! Em, what are you doing in Europe? You should start a Euroblog with pictures to tell us allll about it. Glen’s too busy with life to blog
Glen’s off galavanting around Europe too - London, to be exact. Maybe he will blog between when he gets back (tomorrow - yay!) and when we leave for Jamaica (Sunday - yay!).
Oops! I forgot to change the name in the name box. Last comment’s actually from me!
Memo to Angela: Get a pet. My theory is that you will follow through if we pester you enough.
Or we could get her one for Christmas, bwah ha ha ha.
The libs just don’t get it and until they do get it they will continue to lose election after election as has been the case in the last three. Instead of insulting people in the red states and dismissing them as stupid, maybe they should try a different approach. Maybe one that isn’t quite so hysterical. Although that wouldn’t fit the elitist mold that makes them most comfortable. Oh well, I guess the heartland will continue to set the agenda.
P.S. Europe is completely irrelevant.
I mostly agree with the first part, but please explain how our allies are completely irrelevant.
P.S. Not everybody who votes Democrat is a “lib”.
Eric accidentally posted under my name…
Ahh, I had a feeling.
all I have to say about the European “allies” is Oil for Food. Those countries that vehemently opposed us whacking Saddam were the same ones that were profiting from his attempt to buy their votes to lift sanctions. Oh, and who was in charge of the Oil for Food program?? Koffi Annan’s son. If a corporation in this country was found to be operating in this manner, the mainstream media would pound it into the ground. But you barely hear about it now because it doesn’t fit their agenda. That’s why Europe is irrelevant.

This is one picture that I believe would have benefited from color. How do we know that the light he is laying in is sunlight and not some manipulative use of artificial light?
Comment from Tammy on 28 Nov. 2004, 4:28 pm :
That is the most beautiful picture! I still say you should ditch the aero engineering thing and become a professional photographer.
Comment from Glen on 30 Nov. 2004, 6:49 pm :
Thanks, but I think I’ll keep my day job. Katie, you’ll just have to believe me that it’s sunlight. Besides, the color version looks almost exactly the same, with the addition of a pink nose.
