A “WR” Day

Posted by Rachel in on 29 Sep. 2003, 10:03 pm

In wedding messsage board lingo, WR stands for “wedding related.” Today was WR in a huge way. It started with a trip to “Ye Olde Spirits Shoppe” (Glen is shuddering to think that we’re giving money to a store that spells this way). There I ensured that we would not be having a dry wedding. Now we have to pick our beers. Sam Adams, Heineken and Amstel Light are the front runners, with the caveat being that all beers in glass bottles must be poured into plastic cups first (Ostertag rules).

Then we were off to the courthouse, Katie’s stellar Frederick navigation skills leading the way. Here we got the most important piece of paper for our wedding (a bargain at only $60), our marriage license. I laughed when she asked me if we were related, despite the fact I knew the quesiton was coming. It even says on the license “Relation by blood or by marriage: NONE”.

Next on the list: meeting with the organist to hear some music. Again, Katie’s supreme knowledge of Frederick comes through, while I say, “Where are we going?”. The organist is really nice, fun, and talented. I picked my processional, and it is NOT “Here Comes the Bride.” It’s “Rigaudon”, and when I was listening to it, I was sure I’d feel like a queen walking down the aisle to it.

Final stop of the day: the seamstress, who continues to make improvements to my dress. During this stop, the very important decision was made that I will not be wearing a certain foundation garment that I never in my whole life thought I could go without. Thankfully, the dress has enough support built in. I also learned that one of my, um, attributes, is larger than the other. Jenni will be pleased.

Well, that’s it! Tommorrow, I meet with the florist and the reception site coordinator. Then, I get to make the seating plan. Any special requests? Speak up now!

Sam Adams, but not Sam Adams Oktoberfest. That stuff tastes like mud. Oh, and the reason Ostertag requires glass bottles to be poured into cups might be related to a wedding I attended there two years ago. Lets just say some of the younger guests got a bit… rowdy.

  2. Comment from Em on 30 Sep. 2003, 4:04 pm :

Hell yeah with the rowdiness! Definitely seat me near Kanishka.

Someone please help me, I’m watching Lifetime movies….

  3. Comment from Maggie on 30 Sep. 2003, 6:41 pm :

I vote with Kanishka (minus the firsthand rowdy Ostertag experience).

  4. Comment from Kanishka on 1 Oct. 2003, 7:05 am :

Full disclosure: yes, I did get a little rowdy the last time I was at Ostertag. However, the trouble came from elsewhere–a bunch of my younger sisters friends getting really drunk and stumbling around, culminating with one 15 year old falling down on a beer bottle and slicing open his suit (and part of his arm). His mom did not think it funny, but I found it endlessly amusing.
Still, I have no objections to being seated next to Em!

  5. Comment from Em on 3 Oct. 2003, 8:29 am :

Good to know, since my date is a dumbass and a) is going to leave early to drive back to New York because he didn’t bother to ask for Monday off work despite A YEAR of plan-ahead time, and b) wouldn’t dance with me if he stayed anyway. Bring on the open bar!

  6. Comment from Glen on 6 Oct. 2003, 8:16 pm :

Hey Emily, can you give Rachel and me some emergency, last-minute dancing lessons?

  7. Comment from EYC on 7 Oct. 2003, 3:55 pm :

“I also learned that one of my, um, attributes, is larger than the other.”

    I can’t stop laughing here….

Whoops, sorry Gwendolyn–missed that last post! I offered to Rach!

So Rachel, how is the wedding planning coming along? Is everything under control?

  1. Comment from Rachel on 27 Sep. 2003, 12:25 pm :

Fear not! Everything is coming along just fine :)

Current number of people attending the wedding: 135. I think that’s the final number too!

  2. Comment from Tammy on 27 Sep. 2003, 3:30 pm :

135 is a great number! We had 120 or so– it was perfect.

  3. Comment from Sister of the Bride on 27 Sep. 2003, 6:14 pm :

I find it amusing that with all of your preparations, the wedding is two weeks away and you still lack a marriage license… I’d say you’re slacking!

  4. Comment from Rachel on 27 Sep. 2003, 6:18 pm :

Blah blah blah…. I have to be in Maryland to get it, and only actually need to get it 48 hours before the ceremony. I’ll be slightly more on the ball than that, however, and get it when I meet with the organist on Monday.

  5. Comment from Tammy on 28 Sep. 2003, 8:44 pm :

Just be sure to lie and tell them you’re NOT related to Glen. That’s the main question they ask you.

  6. Comment from Vanny on 29 Sep. 2003, 10:17 am :

I find it funny that you two use the webpage to talk to each other about the wedding. :)

  7. Comment from Em on 29 Sep. 2003, 2:32 pm :

Most likely they will also use the internet to consummate their legal union.

Minor inconvenience

Just as I was starting to wonder how I would fend for myself next week when Rachel returns to Maryland (answer: chili), work saved the day by arranging for a third fun-filled week in Daytona Beach! Right before the wedding! Sources tell of beaches in Florida, but I have seen only the insides of simulators so far. No worries, though. There will be plenty of beaches on the honeymoon — car-free beaches. Besides, I don’t mind being away when Rachel is also away. Traveling requires no cooking or cleaning or spending my own money.

This weekend I’m back in beautiful Illinois, with its sub-112% humidity and relative lack of cockroaches in my suitcase. The agenda includes wedding items such as “haircut”, “read about Kauai”, and “figure out why I’m not yet freaking out about all the stuff we have to do”. But first, a 12-hour nap. I should not post when tired.

I was going to post a picture of a treefrog climbing on my finger, but it was blurry. Either that, or the frog was poisonous and it was my vision that was blurry.

  1. Comment from DAD on 26 Sep. 2003, 6:51 pm :

At least, please put the blurry frog picture in the photo section.

  2. Comment from Maggie on 26 Sep. 2003, 8:59 pm :

PLEASE say you’re kidding about the cockroaches in the suitcase?

  3. Comment from DAD on 27 Sep. 2003, 6:26 am :

Those bugs in the suitcase are known as ‘palmetto bugs’ in Florida.

  4. Comment from Glen on 27 Sep. 2003, 10:39 am :

No, I’m not kidding. There was only one ‘palmetto bug’ in my suitcase, but I wouldn’t expect any at a Marriott.

  5. Comment from Vanny on 29 Sep. 2003, 7:45 am :

Bugs are in your room even in MD, it’s just that in FL they’re a little bigger. You’ll get used to it. Just be sure to zip up!

Memo to Marriott

Dear Marriott, Stop giving me soap! I have enough. So I’m in Daytona now, working on some Seminoles. I like them about as much as a Maryland fan should right now. More on this later, when I don’t have to post from my phone.

  1. Comment from DAD on 20 Sep. 2003, 3:15 pm :

Have you tried using the soap?

  2. Comment from Angela on 20 Sep. 2003, 9:15 pm :

I’m a big fan of the sign that they give you that says no housekeeping needed until checkout. That way, you don’t get extra soap and more importantly you can leave your stuff about instead of cleaning up for the cleaning person :-)

  3. Comment from EYC on 22 Sep. 2003, 9:00 am :

You’re supposed to clean up for the cleaning person? Perhaps that’s I always lose something when I stay at hotels….

  4. Comment from Katie on 26 Sep. 2003, 1:34 pm :

I hope you kept this stash of miniatures… you will need them when you have visitors that forget to bring their own things. MJ had a closet full of shampoos and conditioners - comes in quite handy!

Test 2

Another phone test. It seems to be working now.
