Europants

Posted by Glen in on 29 Mar. 2003, 10:30 am

I bought some Europants today, or should I say Euroknickers. We are in Galway now, having spent a couple of nights in an amazing cottage in the Middle of Nowhere, County Kerry. I had to fend off sheep to capture a midnight photo of the house, and Angela awoke to cows mooing one morning. In keeping with the traditional Irish theme, we made multiple peat fires. And despite the ubiquitous Irish rain, the experience was, as they say, brilliant.

There is Guinness to be had and photos to be made now. More details on Monday.

Glen—don’t bring a sheep home—bring the Irish knit sweaters already made! Glad to hear you’re having a good time.

  2. Comment from Rachel on 29 Mar. 2003, 6:11 pm :

    What the heck are euroknickers?

  3. Comment from Joy on 31 Mar. 2003, 2:52 pm :

Glad your back in USA! I tracked your flight and called your mom to let her know your plane had landed. She was relieved.

  4. Comment from Glen on 31 Mar. 2003, 5:46 pm :

It is my duty to point out that my 2-hour drive home was statistically more risky than all of the plane rides combined, but even that went off without a hitch.

  5. Comment from Joy on 31 Mar. 2003, 7:02 pm :

Glen–was that last comment about driving home for my benefit? I did buy a book on how to conquer your fear of flying—hope it works. Glad you’re home and I know Rachel is too!

  6. Comment from Rachel on 31 Mar. 2003, 9:33 pm :

Very glad! And I have seen euroknickers! Sadly, they aren’t as exciting as they were built up to be. They’re jeans, bearing a striking resemblance to Old Navy’s blasted boot cut jeans… (yes, I’ve seen that commercial too many times!)

  7. Comment from Nick on 1 Apr. 2003, 12:20 am :

Does this mean we’ll get to see the Europants Dance?

  8. Comment from Glen on 1 Apr. 2003, 7:49 pm :

Only if you come to the wedding.

In Eire

Posted by Glen in on 25 Mar. 2003, 10:35 am

Through extreme turbulence and canceled flights and crowds of chain-smoking Europeans, I prevailed. Here I am in Dublin, barely awake enough to produce this update. But update I will. Our British Midland A330-200 won my approval despite its being manufactured by Airbus, due largely to its nose and belly-mounted cameras. I was so excited about watching the landing from the pilot’s perspective that I forgot to snap a picture; I’ll try to remember on the way back. In the meantime, here is a less-exciting photo of the moving map display from somewhere over the north Atlantic. Upon landing in Manchester, I managed to spend $10 on a breakfast consisting of yogurt, fruit and water, and I can’t even blame it on my poor French. As it turns out, the dollar is weak and flabby in these parts. Finally, I would like to point out that people continue to drive on the wrong side of the road here, and I’ll be joining them again tomorrow. We’ll be purchasing full insurance on the rental car.

Naptime. If I can update from Kerry and/or Galway, I will, but I won’t count on it.

Your life takes you to very exciting places. Mine takes me to places like Rochester. Maybe life is telling me something….

  2. Comment from Joy on 25 Mar. 2003, 5:40 pm :

I don’t know where my comment went. It said something about storing.

  3. Comment from Joy on 25 Mar. 2003, 5:41 pm :

Glen, let me know if you found my comment about flying, okay

  4. Comment from Glen on 25 Mar. 2003, 6:36 pm :

Joy, any comment that you leave successfully will show up here. I did not receive anything about flying….

  5. Comment from Joy on 26 Mar. 2003, 8:33 am :

Have patience with me, Glen—I’m just trying to figure out how to use this page. I sent you a note on the tagboard not really knowing what I’m doing. I can hear all your friends that visit your web page, laughing. Don’t forget I’m a few years older than you and I’m doing this all on my own. Your Auntie, Joy

  6. Comment from Joy on 26 Mar. 2003, 8:36 am :

I’m also laughing trying to figure this all out. Actually it’s easier to use the phone or pen and ink.

Oh don’t worry, Auntie Joy - Glen will ALWAYS make us laugh. Have him tell you about his adventure to Virginia Tech sometime!

Crossing the line

Have you ever had a telemarketer CALL BACK immediately after hanging up on them? I always assumed the slimiest of slimy telemarketers couldn’t be that obnoxious until it happened to us today. A woman called up this morning selling AT&T Wireless service (with a free Nokia phone!), and Rachel promptly hung up after explaining that we already have cellphones. Ten seconds later, the phone rang again: “This is Alicia again…” Unbelievable. Telemarketing is a notoriously crappy job, so I’m never rude to them; I blame the company, not the individual. But in this case, Alicia is lucky that Rachel, not I, answered the phone when she crossed the line and called back.

In a related story: I recently discovered that posting your email address on an Internet message board is an excellent way to increase your daily spam intake by about 500%. How fortunate I am to have discovered so many new ways to “Stimulate [My] Love Life”! Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go “Claim [My] $500″ from 123OnlineCash!

  1. Comment from EYC on 22 Mar. 2003, 2:33 pm :

I’m glad that you’ve found so many different ways to stimulate your love life. I assume that Rachel is gald too. LOL

  2. Comment from Mother of the Bride on 23 Mar. 2003, 12:29 pm :

Hence the reason I don’t answer my phone!

  3. Comment from Millie on 23 Mar. 2003, 1:04 pm :

If you don’t have or do these things already, you should get caller ID or let your answering machine pick up. I was home one Saturday and the phone rang TEN times for Sabrina and all were telemarketers. Irritating.

As a former telemarketer (from summer of my junior year in high school), I am glad you’re nice to telemarketers. You just have to be firm and friendly-toned when you cut them off and tell them no. There’s no need to get really psychotic like some answerers I have had. But that second call was really out of line.

If you have a lot of digital photos to organize, Adobe Photoshop Album ($50) is the greatest program, ever. You’ll never again have to worry about filenames or hard drive organization, and it even lets you offload your hi-res TIFFs or JPEGs onto CD-ROMs while storing smaller, screen-size versions on your hard drive. Tres useful.

Take-home exam is done, finally. Now I just need to do laundry and prepare for Monday’s trip!

Danger Zone

Well, I accepted the job offer today and sealed my fate for the next few years. All things considered, I’m looking forward to it. My start date is June 10th with no vacation during the summer, but I do get to come home for the wedding and take a week off for the honeymoon (lucky me!) The work is exactly what I want to do: flight simulation, with a little bit of aerodynamics and a little bit of coding.

The company builds flight simulators. Pictured below is a highly-modified Model 142 from the Beckman building here on campus, which we will be using in an upcoming NASA-produced film of our icing research. Rob and I put together a demonstration using this sim today, and I used my new digital camera and Windows Movie Maker to produce a short video clip (highly recommended!) Note the cheesy transitions and titling; obviously, I was a film producer in a former life. Let me know if you cannot play the clip (it’s a WMV, whatever that is). I can convert it to MPEG if need be.

  1. Comment from EYC on 20 Mar. 2003, 8:46 pm :

Allow me to be the first poster to say Congratulations.

  2. Comment from Glen on 20 Mar. 2003, 9:29 pm :

Sorry, that honor was awarded on March 11th and 13th, but close enough. Thanks!

  3. Comment from EYC on 20 Mar. 2003, 9:52 pm :

Clearly, I’m a idiot… I meant to say “First poster on this blog post.”

    Uhm… you don’t like it? D’oh…

  4. Comment from 5.0 on 21 Mar. 2003, 12:15 pm :

Congrats. I used to make military simulators (worked on a LCAC and V-22) - I hope you know what you’re getting in to! As long as you don’t work for Hughes, you should be fine.

  5. Comment from Glen on 21 Mar. 2003, 1:24 pm :

What am I getting myself into? This company (not Hughes) doesn’t do any military, as far as I know.

  6. Comment from Tammy on 22 Mar. 2003, 3:41 pm :

Congrats on taking the job offer, mon petit chien! Does one week off mean you won’t be going to Hawaii? May I suggest ARUBA as an alternative? :-)

    That video clip is neat!

  7. Comment from Glen on 22 Mar. 2003, 3:55 pm :

I get a week and a half of unpaid vacation for the wedding and Kauai honeymoon. No Aruba this time around.

  8. Comment from jane on 24 Mar. 2003, 10:45 am :

yay–having a job is so much fun–well, having money is a lot of fun anyway :)
